The K9 unit was established at the inception of the City of West Sacramento in 1987. Over the years the total number of K9 teams range from one to three at any given time. Currently the police department has two K9 teams and a K9 Sergeant.
The primary function of the Canine Unit is to reduce the opportunity for injury or death to officers engaged in the normal or dangerous scope of their duties. The Canine Unit operates as a specialized team; responsible for providing effective canine service whenever necessary.
A Canine Team is dispatched to calls involving suspects wanted for serious crimes or that are likely to be armed with deadly weapons. In those cases, canines used to apprehend a suspect is certainly preferable to the use of deadly force in taking a person into custody.
On July 10, 2010, due to budget cuts, the West Sacramento Police Department lost the K-9 unit of Geoff Albert and K-9 Taz. Geoff and Taz were in the unit from July 2003 to July 2010. They attended over 2500 hours of training and won numerous trophies in competition. Geoff and Taz saw approximately 400 suspects surrender in their presence and if course over 30 suspects chose not to surrender. Goeff and Taz were a solid, productive and knowledgeable K-9 team. The K-9 Association presented Geoff with a beautiful "THANK YOU" plaque from the unit. Geoff will be sorely missed as an excellent K-9 handler, we hope Taz enjoys his retirement.

July 26, 2010
SACRAMENTO - A woman who the CHP says has a history of DUI arrests and who was wanted on several no-bail warrants, led the California Highway Patrol through three counties before finally being run off the road in Sacramento.
She reached speeds of 100 miles an hour, roared over the Tower Bridge into Sacramento, and rammed a CHP cruiser before they pinned her with two cruisers on 4th Street between Capitol Mall and L Streets.
The woman refused orders to get out of the car.
A bean bag shotgun shell was deployed at least twice, which shattered the window. A K-9 officer from the West Sacramento Police Department then drug her out of the car. She was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening wounds.
No officers were hurt. An officer originally tried to pull her over in Vacaville when he noticed her Oregon plates matched those of a car stolen out of Carmichael.

7-18-2009, 1500 hours, Today Dave and Chance found themselves as part of the top news story for several local new channels. A mountain lion was spotted in the Southport area and Dave and Chance withstood the 100 plus degree temperatures and assisted local and state animal control officers in trying to locate the lion.
Zar is getting close to returning to patrol. He was diagnosed with a deep bone infection - this bone was broken in four places. The bone had to heal before the bone would fuse itself together. The infection has now cleared up and he is rapidly healing. We are hoping to be back to serving the citizens of West Sacramento on Tuesday, July 28, 2009.
